thinking about the weekend (and not the fact it's Monday)

My mom came to visit this weekend; needless to say, it was EPIC. We did lots of touristy things, i.e. visiting museums. She took some good pics of the two of us on her camera, but who knows when those will come to light...

So for now, here are the pics we do have, mainly ones of me taken by Mama on her iPhone. Prepare yourselves!

Outside the Library of Congress (next to the Folger Shakespeare Library we visited)

May or may not be my bizarre evil twin in a horse-drawn carriage replica located in the
National Postal Museum

At an Irish restaurant drinking no, not Guinness, but Riesling...keeping it classy

My attempt at being on the FBI's Most Wanted list. Right alongside dudes with cool nicknames.
Mine would probably be Slim Jim the Rat

when the boss is out

And you have to take over as Acting Managing Editor--AKA your stress levels are heightened, you have to do an epic job to impress everyone, and above all, you must REMAIN CALM. The good news is I am wearing my power pants (hot pink H&M find)...

Flower Child

Spring time has arrived. And for some reason I was overtaken by the urge to take flower pictures. Probably because I had a lovely walk around Georgetown with the bestie :)

TGIF

The title says it all. Not only am I having a decent hair day (despite leaving the house amidst a monsoon this morning), the office is not too cold, not too hot, it's just right. Finally eating lunch, working on a book about a transpolar flight, counting down the hours until I come face to face again with the infamous Bachelor of ye old blog posts. I'm a bundle of nervous energy but clearly it's all about excitement at this point. Hopefully I still look halfway acceptable at 5:20 this afternoon. Either way, dreams do come true. My god, I'm waxing Cinderella-poetic again...what's a girl to do? ;)

very superstitious, writing on the wall

Superstition--a great song and an interesting ideology. I'm not actually superstitious, but maybe I have a little bit of concern in regards to black cats, broken mirrors, and walking under ladders. Not so much regarding the Bloody Mary game one can play in front of a mirror.

If you ask my high school best friend Paige, she can tell you that squirrels have always been the enemy. (It's a long-running inside joke; no point in asking). So when I saw my first infamous black squirrel in D.C., I thought what the heck--these vile creatures must be tantamount to black cats!

They are bad omens, I'm telling you. There are also white squirrels. Seriously, they're like albinos or something. I'm not sure what they mean. Neither are good luck, that's for sure. It's like saying The Black Death. Capital letters are very necessary: The Black Squirrel.

the lost art of

getting nails done. Girls, I'm not saying you have to get acrylics (like I do--I must say they look fabulous), but getting a manicure can really boost your look. I have a bad habit of biting my nails. It's been a longstanding habit, one I've had since middle school, I'd wager. If you bite your nails, acrylics will kill that habit. They're tough as diamonds, don't bother taking your teeth to them.

You will never know if the manicurist likes you. He or she has a 99% chance of being of some Asian variety. They will talk about you in another language. But just smile and tell them exactly what you want, and you should have no problems.

My experience was quite pleasant. The nice lady really took pride in her work. It really is an art form, doing nails. The lady next to me got cherry blossoms painted on her toenails. Such a cute addition. But painting those requires a delicate touch and a paint brush with like one hair the size of one's pinky finger. I mean I'm just saying, it takes effort and precision.

The most cliché moment of the day was when I saw another Asian lady, currently on a lunch break, eating an egg roll. So there was THAT.

a spring in your step

It looks like it's finally spring here in D.C. But wait, it might snow tomorrow or a hailstorm might come in a mighty torrent...suffice it to say, one can't get too comfortable with the nice weather.

Cherry blossoms. Nature's beauty pageant queens of the spring season. pink, Pink, and more PINK (perfect, as that is my favorite color). Are they here or not? There are little clusters that have popped out already, but mostly they are still in the early stages of blooming...which really pisses off the tourists...who really piss me off. It's a vicious cycle.

So every week I go on a run with my coworkers after work. The route varies, and this past week we decided to go see if the cherry blossoms had made their debut into society yet this year, like the debutantes they are. Alas no. But there were tourists EVERYWHERE. Unhappy ones I might add. And taking pictures of the unbloomed blossoms. Not very satisfying. Needless to say the camera-happy people just don't get out of the way. I am running here! Move! As Eliza Doolittle would say in My Fair Lady, "Come on, Dova! Move your bloomin' ass!"

I didn't shout at the tourists. I try to channel my inner chi. Which is a joke--that's like saying I have inner peace. Which is complete bull****. Tourists in spring don't help my problems when I'm sick, either. Which I am. But thanks to modern medicine (aka Dayquil, Nyquil, all of the quils that can help solve my pathetic sickly miserable issues), I am sure to be up and about, with a spring in my step, very shortly.

Unless the tourists take that spring away from me...
